Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.

The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.

Why art? Beautiful Distress believes that art is pre-eminently capable of articulating and depicting the human condition

Residency Unlimited

Founded in 2009 as a nonprofit tax-exempt organization based in Brooklyn (NY), Residency Unlimited (RU)  supports the creative process and promotes exchange through its unique residency program and year-round public programs. Moving beyond the traditional studio model, RU forges strategic partnerships with collaborating institutions to offer flexible and customized residencies designed to meet the individual goals, needs and visions of local and international artists and curators. RU is particularly committed to promoting multidisciplinary practices and building lasting connections between residents and the broader arts community.

When the Beautiful distress residency initiative was set up in 2014 at Kings County Center Hospital in Brooklyn, RU was invited to join forces. RU provides network and technical support to the selected BD artists who spend 3 months in residency at KCHC. RU also organizes public Talks and Screenings where the BD artists can present their projects to New York audiences.
