Relation to Beautiful Distress - Beautiful Distress invited Sachi Miyachi en Nina Glockner to spend a residency period in the artist residency program it organizes with The Fifth Season Foundation with Fukuroda Hospital and Daigo Town in Japan during the fall of 2019. 

About the artists - Miyachi makes installations and performances reflecting on the physical and psychological environment of people. Her architectural structures are often hopeful representations of the people she works with. The audience walks through her constructions and in that way becomes a participant.  

Sachi Miyachi studied at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam, NL Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, NL, and Wako University, Tokyo, JP. Her work is internationally recognized and exhibited. 

Glockner studied at Jan van Eyck Academy, Amsterdam, Sandberg Institute, Maastricht, Academie Minerva Groningen, Marmara Art University, Istanbul, Humboldt Universität Berlin. Nina Glockner’s performative practice is about exploring the thin line between executing control and being under a state of control. It deals with (power) relationships among humans, objects and actions in a given space. The contact with ‘the other’ is important to create understanding between people who normally would not automatically interact. In 2005 she stayed in the Mental hospital for a three months residency of the Fifth Season in Den Dolder, Altrecht hospital. 

Nina and Sachi often work together in duo productions, as they did during the residency at Fukuroda Hospital and Daigo Town in Japan and the following exhibition There Is No Better Me.

About the residency - Following the residency, Glockner and Miyachi will exhibit There Is No Better Me at Beautiful Distress House from November 2022 until March 2023. There

Is No Better Me is an urgent echo out of their field research about mental health during the Artist-in-Residency-period at Fukuroda Psychiatric Hospital (Japan, 2019) as well as an ongoing exploration of cultural prejudice and ideas around the pathologizing of human behaviour.

There Is No Better Me aims to materialize fragments of their archive of visual storytelling and anecdotal conversations, in order to be experienced by visitors with all their senses.

A wall will be taken as a medium –both as a hindrance as well as an interface– to explore mental, physical, psychological, metaphorical, social, linguistic, and cultural boundaries.

With an architectural installation and performative sound scores, they’ll take the eyes, ears, and the physical, bodily presence of visitors as important elements to complete their spatial intervention.

Relatie tot Beautiful Distress - Beautiful Distress nodigde Sachi Miyachi en Nina Glockner uit voor een residentieperiode in het artist residency programma dat zij samen met The Fifth Season Foundation organiseert met het Fukuroda Hospital en Daigo Town in Japan in het najaar van 2019. 

Over de kunstenaars - Miyachi maakt installaties en performances die reflecteren op de fysieke en psychologische omgeving van mensen. Haar architectonische constructies zijn vaak hoopvolle representaties van de mensen met wie ze werkt. Het publiek loopt door haar constructies en wordt op die manier deelnemer.

Het gaat over (machts)relaties tussen mensen, objecten en handelingen in een gegeven ruimte. Het contact met 'de ander' is belangrijk om begrip te creëren tussen mensen die normaal gesproken niet automatisch met elkaar omgaan. In 2005 verbleef ze drie maanden in het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis in Den Dolder, Altrecht ziekenhuis. 

Nina en Sachi werken vaak samen in duoproducties, zoals tijdens de residentie in het Fukuroda Hospital en Daigo Town in Japan en de daaropvolgende tentoonstelling There Is No Better Me.

Over de residentie - Na de residentie exposeren Glockner en Miyachi There Is No Better Me in het Beautiful Distress House van november 2022 tot maart 2023.

There Is No Better Me is een dringende weerslag van hun veldonderzoek naar geestelijke gezondheid tijdens de Artist-in-Residency-periode in het Fukuroda Psychiatrisch Ziekenhuis (Japan, 2019) en een doorlopend onderzoek naar culturele vooroordelen en ideeën rond het pathologiseren van menselijk gedrag.

There Is No Better Me wil fragmenten van hun archief van visuele verhalen en anekdotische gesprekken materialiseren, zodat bezoekers ze met al hun zintuigen kunnen ervaren.

Een muur wordt gebruikt als medium - zowel als hindernis als interface - om mentale, fysieke, psychologische, metaforische, sociale, linguïstische en culturele grenzen te verkennen.

Met een architecturale installatie en performatieve geluidsscores zullen zij de ogen, oren en de fysieke, lichamelijke aanwezigheid van bezoekers als belangrijke elementen beschouwen om hun ruimtelijke interventie te voltooien.
