Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.
The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.
Why art? Beautiful Distress believes that art is pre-eminently capable of articulating and depicting the human condition

Een prachtig project, waar ze zich op verheugt, zegt Louwes, die half in scherts vertelt dat haar lijfspreuk ‘Rather a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy’ is.

Er is relatief weinig maatschappelijke aandacht voor deze groep patiënten en hun problemen zijn vaak omgeven met taboes. Beautiful Distress zet kunst in om dit lijden zichtbaar te maken en zo meer begrip en compassie te kweken voor mensen die kampen met psychische aandoeningen en hun naaste omgeving. Beautiful Distress werkt met kunstenaars van naam, die in hun oeuvre affiniteit met de doelstellingen van de Stichting hebben laten zien.
