Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.
The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.

One of the newest and most unusual museums in the UK, Museum of the Mind, which opened only last year at Bethlem, one of the oldest mental hospitals in the world, has made the shortlist for the 2016 Museum of the Year award.

Op 1 mei organiseert de Culturele Ambassade in het Lloyd hotel een afsluitend evenement van de tentoonstelling MANEGE die te zien was in ArtDeli. op deze zondagmiddag gaat Wilco Tuinebreijer gastcurator van de tentoonstelling MANEGE in gesprek met schilder Ronald Ophuis en de Belgische fotograaf Tim Dirven. Tijdens deze middag wordt gesproken over de schilderijen van Ophuis en de fotoserie Lost in Guantanamo van Dirven. Beide kunstenaars houden zich bezig met dezelfde thematiek: machtsverhoudingen, misbruik en extreem menselijk geweld komen aan het licht. In het werk kijken zij naar het verleden en heden, de beruchte terreurgevangenis op Guantánamo Bay en de concentratiekampen van Duitsland en Rwanda. Ophuis en Dirven tonen in hun werk een weergave van onze huidige wereld en samenleving.

Ophuis schildert confronterende voorstellingen van lijden en geweld. Zijn schilderijen verbeelden pijnlijke situaties in plaatsen als het concentratiekamp Birkenau, maar ook locaties die een meer recente fase van oorlog en verstoring tonen zoals Rwanda, Congo, Irak en Srebrenica. Deze historische gebeurtenissen dreigen vaak gaandeweg hun emotionele impact te verliezen, waardoor ons inlevingsvermogen verflauwt.
Bij het werken aan een schilderij doet Ophuis uitgebreid onderzoek. Hij bezoekt landen die het decor zijn van oorlog, geweld en lijden. In zijn werk neemt hij geen moreel standpunt in, de toeschouwer zelf moet zich zien te verhouden tot de pijnlijke taferelen.
Ronald Ophuis studeerde aan de AKI Academie in Enschede en aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Hij wordt vertegenwoordigd door Upstream Gallery sinds 2007.

In 2010 kreeg fotojournalist Tim Dirven toestemming om het gevangenkamp Guantánamo te fotograferen. Dit kamp werd in 2004 door het Internationaal Comité van het Rode Kruis beschuldigd van ‘humiliating acts’, eenzame opsluiting, gevangenen werden blootgesteld aan extreme temperaturen en martelingen.
President Obama beloofde tijdens zijn campagne en aantreden in 2008 en 2009 het gevangenkamp op de Amerikaanse marinebasis Guantánamo Bay te sluiten. Of deze missie daadwerkelijk gaat slagen voor het einde van zijn presidentschap in januari 2017 valt te betwijfelen. De fotoserie Lost in Guantanamo toont een wereld waar het regime voelbaar is en veel verder rijkt dan de vertegenwoordigers ervan die te zien zijn op de beelden.
Tim Dirven studeerde fotografie aan het Sint-Lucas in Brussel, evenals in FAMU academie in Praag. In 1994 begon hij te werken als fotograaf en startte 1996 als vaste freelance te werken voor de krant De Morgen. Door de jaren heen heeft hij vele reportages over de hele wereld gemaakt. Kranten, tijdschriften en NGO's publiceren graag zijn werk in hun publicaties.

De gastcurator van de tentoonstelling MANEGE is Wilco Tuinebreijer.
Pyschiater, eerste geneeskundige MGGZ-GGD Amsterdam, directeur van de stichting Beautiful Distress en al 20 jaar werkzaam op het gebied van grote stadspsychiatrie die hij combineert met projecten die zowel de kunst als de psychiatrie raken. Wilco heeft schilder Ronald Ophuis en fotograaf Tim Dirven geselecteerd en tijdens deze middag gaan wij in op de betekenis van geweld in kunst. Over de grenzen tussen dader en slachtofferschap. En over de gevolgen van geweld op de psyche.

Interview With Artist Christiaan Bastiaans About Beautiful Distress
A couple of months ago Christiaan Bastiaans ended his artist-in-residence stay in the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. He was one of the six artists, four Dutch and two American, who each spent three months inside the hospital to get inspired by the patients, staff and surroundings and eventually reflect this in their artwork. Last November/December, he exhibited some of his findings in the solo exhibition 'Pharmacy Deux Milles’ at the contemporary artspace Looiersgracht 60 in Amsterdam.It’s time to take a closer look at the man behind the artwork.
When reading about the projects Christiaan Bastiaans has established over the years, you would find the term ‘Hurt Models’ quite often in relation to his work. He focuses on people who are forced against their will to find ways to survive, the alienated and displaced people of our society. In his exploration of the human condition, he has named these people Hurt Models. Christiaan Bastiaans’s work deals with existential issues, he tries to create awareness by giving the displaced, the Hurt Models, a voice. It is one of the reasons he contributed to the Beautiful Distress project. Although Christiaan Bastiaans sheds light on this group, their problems are constricted in a larger social problem. One with notions of power and control. Bastiaans asks himself the question: ‘How can art and poetic imagination facilitates those who are most vulnerable in a changing world that is dictated by power notions and market mechanisms?’ This stirs up new ideas for him as an artist, about communication and participation, in which the artist-in-residence constructed projects are a well-fitted-form. ‘Artist-in-residence projects broaden the knowledge about subject matter and groups we don't know about yet. Inspiring collaborations, I think, is the most important aspect of it. It’s so important to inspire others and get inspired, to create more understanding. These experiences will always stick with you and is the most important reason why I became an artist.’
During his time in the Kings County Hospital, Christiaan Bastiaans didn’t work closely with the clients. Instead, he wanted to explore the environment and talk to the KCH employees to gain insights. He attended staff evaluations and noted everything he found of value for the project’s development. He produced notebooks with ideas and moodboards shaped as a film/live performance plan in progress. This will result in a radioplay- and a filmscript, that in its further processing, such as working with professional actors, will be integrated in an interdisciplinary presentation. 'This material will become part of a project titled ‘Valuable Cargo’. I’ve worked on this project for the last two years and will present it sometime in 2017. The script is about a psychiatric hospital that has changed into an utopian community created by patients and staff. It has all the aspects of a science fiction thriller; when the outside world tries to take over this self-made paradise created by displaced people.’
Although Bastiaans is very passionate about his work, he doesn’t try to impose an opinion. ‘I don’t want to tell people what to do. I think that every good artwork, which is based upon well-founded ideas and thoughts, always shows a reflection of the artist’s opinion. I do want my art to move people and inspire them to think about social issues, but I have no intention in forcing something. Encourage to think freely, that’s the main reason why I create.’

Tonight’s discussion at RU will focus on Bastiaans' artistic practice within psychiatric settings and most recently his working process at Kings County Hospital Center. Fostered by the Beautiful Distress Foundation (BD) with support from RU in New York, this residency initiative aims to de-stigmatize mental illness through artistic initiative in psychiatric settings. Guest speakers will include Paul Laster (writer and critic), Wilco Tuinebreijer , founder of Beautiful Distress and Carlos Rodriguez Perez, Director of the Wellness and Recovery Division at the Behavioral Health Service, KCHC.

2016 started well for Beautiful Distress. A grant was awarded to Beautiful Distress by the Art of Impact Fund to create a major interactive art exhibition and conference.
The Art of Impact fund (an initiative from the Dutch Secretary of State for Culture, Education and Science, Jet Bussemaker, stimulates one-off new art projects with a clear impact on a social issue or problem.
In De Psychiater, het tijdschrift van de Nederlandse Vereniging voor Psychiatrie, verscheen een bespreking van Wilco Tuinebreijer van Exquisite Errors, een prachtig en intrigerend boek van kunstenaar en filmmaker Barry van der Rijt met de DSM-IV en zijn eigen diagnose ADHD als uitgangspunt. Hij raakte gefascineerd door de betekenis van het hebben van afwijkingen en de diagnoses die daaraan worden gekoppeld. Hij vroeg zich af wat het labelen van mensen voor gevolg heeft. Stigmatiseert het hen of bestaat er ook een andere kant? Kan een afwijking ook schoonheid in zich dragen of genereren?

When asylums spread across 19th-century Europe, providing a captive population of mad people, artists began to use actual patients as models for their drawings and paintings. These images are often less extreme than earlier portraits, but their typically grotesque emotionality is just as dehumanising.

De wereld van psychiatrie en fotografie raken elkaar. De caleidoscoop verschuift van patiëntenportretten als documentatie voor ziektebeelden, naar een aanklacht over wantoestanden. Tot de patiënt uiteindelijk zelf het heft in handen neemt en ons toelaat in zijn wereld.

Het ontstaan van het psychiatrisch gesticht en de prille ontwikkeling van de fotografie vallen samen, ongeveer halfweg de negentiende eeuw. Psychiaters en fotografen raken snel geïnteresseerd in elkaars wereld. Tot diep in de twintigste eeuw fotografeert men patiënten als een vorm van inventarisatie, een poging om de ziekte, veeleer dan de zieke te documenteren.
In de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw wijzigt de relatie: fotografen klagen met hun werk de wantoestanden in de psychiatrie aan. De evidentie van het gesticht is verleden tijd.
De fascinatie voor de fotografie is in de psychiatrie nog altijd aan de orde. Maar de inzet is gewijzigd: de patiënt gaat zelf aan de slag en geeft een inkijk in zijn wereld.
Lichtgevoelig. Psychiaters Patiënten Portretten 1865-2015 toont een lange en intense geschiedenis met onverwachte en verrassende lijnen: verkrampte handen, vreemde lichaamscurves, half verborgen medische instrumenten. Naast Lichtgevoelig zijn er vanaf midden juni nog drie andere fototentoonstellingen te zien: Condemned - Robin Hammond, Facing Japan en Het Huis - Karin Borghouts. De zomertentoonstellingen kaderen in het Gentse festival 80 days of Summer.
Op 3 september is er een artist talk tussen Wouter van Riesen en Wilco Tuinebreijer in Art Deli. Hierop wordt ingegaan op de werken van Wouter, die van Van Gogh en hoe deze zich verhouden tot de missie van Beautiful Distress.
Op donderdag 9 juli 2015 van 18.00 tot 20.00 uur (inloop vanaf 17.00) presenteert Beautiful Distress in het Lloyd Hotel & Culturele Ambassade werk van Aldo van den Broek, onze tweede artist-in-residence in het Kings County Hospital in New York.
In een gesprek met Wilco Tuinebreijer zal Aldo van den Broek vertellen over zijn ervaringen in New York en zijn verblijf in het psychiatrische ziekenhuis in Brooklyn en werk dat hij daar maakte, toelichten .

De Amsterdamse wethouder Kasja Ollongren ( Economie, Kunst en Cultuur) bezocht afgelopen zondag 14 juni Beautiful Distress en het Kings County Hospital In Brooklyn, New York. Zij werd rondgeleid door Carlos Rodriguez Peres (Director of the Wellness and Recovery Division at the Behavioral Health Service, Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn).
De kunstenaars Guy Richard Smiths en Rebecca Chamberlain vertelden hoe het was om drie maanden als artist in residence te gast te zijn in het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis in Den Dolder en toonden werk dat ze daar hadden gemaakt.
Wethouder Ollongren betoonde zich zeer enthousiast over het werk en doelstelling van Beautiful Distress.
