Relationship to Beautiful Distress - Charlott Markus runs a pilot for Beautiful Distress' new artist residency at GGz Centraal, location Zon & Schild in Amersfoort.

About the artist - Markus is a Swedish visual artist living in Amsterdam. She first studied psychology and theology at the University of Lund, Sweden. But for her art education, she moved to Amsterdam, where she completed the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2007. Besides being a visual artist, Markus is also a photographer, organises events and curates exhibitions. 

Markus constructs still lifes and arrangements that mainly end up as spatial pieces (often site-specific) and as photographic series. Her work can be described as 'extended still-lifes'; she explores the possibilities and limits of still life and uses it to create new narratives and meanings. In a theatre-like way, Markus' work creates an alternative space in which the margins between photography, painting and sculpture intertwine, always zooming in on the whole. The way Markus works is not just an investigation of space, colour and form, but a direct examination of relationships and hidden structures (often mixed with her own biography).

About the residency - Charlott Markus focuses on the 'in-between' and the emotionally hidden where structures and the practice of actual seeing, play a major role. With an intersectional view of society, she navigates between the poetic and the confrontational.

For more than three months, Markus is working at the Zon & Schild site and, following on from her previous projects, she wants to take a new step and investigate the notion of 'feeling safe', within the complex relationships between hiding, feeling 'invisible' and being seen.

About the artist - Markus is een Zweedse beeldend kunstenaar die woont in Amsterdam. Ze studeerde eerst psychologie en theologie aan de universiteit van Lund, Zweden. Maar voor haar kunst educatie vertrok ze naar Amsterdam, waar ze in 2007 de Gerrit Rietveld Academie afrondde. Naast beeldend kunstenaar is Markus ook fotograaf, organiseert ze evenementen en cureert ze tentoonstellingen. 

Markus construeert stillevens en arrangementen die voornamelijk eindigen als ruimtelijke stukken (vaak site-specific) en als fotografische series. Haar werk kan worden omschreven als 'extended still-lifes'; ze verkent de mogelijkheden en grenzen van het stilleven en gebruikt het om nieuwe verhalen en betekenissen te creëren. Op een theaterachtige manier creëert Markus met haar werk een alternatieve ruimte waarin de marges tussen fotografie, schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst door elkaar lopen, steeds inzoomend op het geheel. De manier waarop Markus werkt is niet alleen een onderzoek naar ruimte, kleur en vorm, maar een direct onderzoek naar relaties en verborgen structuren (vaak vermengd met haar eigen biografie).
