Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.

The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.

Why art? Beautiful Distress believes that art is pre-eminently capable of articulating and depicting the human condition

Onzichtbaar Verlies

A group exhibition including newly graduated HKU students
March 08, 2024 - May 26, 2024

Onzichtbaar Verlies (translated: Invisible Loss) is an exhibition about art and epilepsy. Epilepsy is more than just a physical condition. With 1 in 100 people worldwide affected by epilepsy, many feel the profound impact on their mental well-being. Unfortunately, the losses they go through often remain invisible. Can art help us talk about this?

The exhibition Onzichtbaar Verlies highlights the inner world of people with epilepsy and those around them. Eight young artists have drawn inspiration from their stories and experiences. These personal stories have been brought to life in works, through which the exhibition hopes to make invisible losses tangible.

The story

Caro Jacobs received the alumni award from the Utrecht School of the Arts in July 2022 so that she could further shape her project "Invisible loss in epilepsy." Caro herself had a difficult form of epilepsy from a young age. By taking an art course, Caro understood that practicing art can help acknowledge the impact of a condition.

With her exhibition, she hoped to address the taboo surrounding the invisible loss in epilepsy and create connection between those who feel different in society and society itself.

On Aug. 21, 2022, Caro died of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). Anja Jacobs and Cathelijne Brouwer decided to continue this beautiful initiative.

the artists

The artists Charlotte, Myrthe, Max, Rheanne, Caro, Annemiek, Daan and Zoë went in search of the invisible loss in epilepsy. They were inspired by their own experiences, reading personal stories from EpilepsieNL and by meetings with people who have epilepsy themselves or with other experts by experience. All these experiences have been translated into eight works of art that may make the invisible visible.

program

  • Opening: Friday, March 08 from 5 PM

  • Stop Motion Workshop: Thursday 28 March 2024 during NDSM Get Lost by Sacha Herman
Sasha Herman is an artist and animator working with stop motion animation. Recently the focus of Sasha's work has been epilepsy and ways of using animation to portray and share people's stories and experiences of the condition. During NDSM get lost as part of the Onzichtbaar Verlies exhibition, Sasha will be sharing his knowledge of stop motion animation. He will be leading a workshop during which visitors will help him with his latest animated project; using painted cardboard to produce stop motion animated portraits of people speaking about their experiences of living with epilepsy.

  • Makersmeeting, April 19 from 8 PM
As a starting artist, you're expected to engage with 'the establishment' - those who have worked in the field for years, whom you address formally and sometimes feel distant to. But what vision does the new generation hold for the arts? There's a wave of fresh talent sweeping through the art world, breathing new life into the scene. What drives these newcomers? Do we seek conformity to the status quo, of do we push until change emerges?
tickets 4 euro (incl gratis drankje)

  • Thee Talk, May 12 from 3 PM
When you visit the exhibition Onzichtbaar Verlies, you can take a homemade tea bag from illustrator Charlotte Claessen. She hopes people will share this bag with a loved one and start a conversation based on the questions she came up with. On Sunday afternoon 12 May, join Charlotte in crafting your own tea bag and address your personal topics. Write your own questions on the bags, or start with one of the questions Charlott has come up with. Tip: bring your mum along for Mother's Day!
