Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.

The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.

Why art? Beautiful Distress believes that art is pre-eminently capable of articulating and depicting the human condition

De bevlogen theatermaakster Rianne Meboer onderzoekt in Amsterdam-Noord hoe we omgaan met verward gedrag. Met welke woorden spreek je integer over dit onderwerp? Wie of wat komt de (tijdelijk) dolende mens tegen? En wat maakt de omgeving hierin mee?

Ze ging in gesprek met ervaringsdeskundigen, psychotherapeuten en wijkagenten, liep mee bij het Leger des Heils en volgde een cursus Mental Health First Aid. Uiteindelijk bleek haar eigen werkervaring in de zorg en de persoonlijke ervaring met mentale gezondheid een grotere rol te spelen dan ze van tevoren dacht. Rianne bundelt de uitkomsten van haar onderzoek in een theatrale, humoristische presentatie en een dialoog (Deep Democracy) met publiek en betrokkenen. Zo loopt haar onderzoek tijdens Over het IJ Festival gewoon door.
