Beautiful Distress was founded on the concept that there is a great deal of mental suffering, that not enough people are aware of this and that not enough is done to stop it.

The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it.

Why art? Beautiful Distress believes that art is pre-eminently capable of articulating and depicting the human condition

Binnen haar werk verbindt theatermaker Alexandra Broeder de domeinen kunst en psychiatrie met elkaar. In The Sheeptown Project wordt het publiek een parallel universum ingezogen waar de deuren opengaan naar een andere werkelijkheid. In het Beautiful Distress House op de NDSM-werf herrijst deze zomer een tempel waar het publiek een ceremonie bijwoont, geleid door kinderen. De dienst wordt gehouden ter ere van het mysterieuze Schapenkind.

Het Schapenkind is een symbool voor alle kinderen en jongeren die Broeder de afgelopen periode binnen de GGZ heeft mogen ontmoeten. Het gedrag dat er in onze maatschappij voor zorgt dat deze kinderen buiten het systeem vallen wordt in The Sheeptown Project benaderd als een spirituele kracht die ons via een rituele ceremonie toegang geeft tot onze eigen kwetsbaarheid.

Dit programma door Alexandra Broeder is in samenwerking met Beautiful Distress en is onderdeel van het Over het IJ Festival.
