Met trots kondigen wij aan dat Toon Walravens ambassadeur is geworden van Beautiful Distress. Toon is een ervaringsdeskundige, die zich inzet voor zorg waarin de cliënt, zijn omgeving en een goede behandeling centraal staan. Zijn indrukwekkende levensverhaal bestaat uit een jeugd vol vallen en opstaan, uithuisplaatsing, gevangenisleven, verslaving, geweld, behandeling en therapieën.
In zijn lange zoektocht naar herstel heeft hij zich ontwikkeld tot een belangrijk bestrijder van stigma. Met indrukwekkende energie zet hij zich in via persoonlijke, onconventionele wegen om cliënten te ondersteunen op hun weg naar herstel. Zijn eigen verhaal en zijn levenservaring zijn daarbij de leidraad. Toon Walravens werkt als ervaringsdeskundige bij GGZ Eindhoven. In zijn team staan talentontwikkeling, inspiratie, passie en ontmoetingen centraal.

Vanaf begin oktober heeft Yasmijn Karhof als nieuwe kunstenaar haar intrek genomen in de Beautiful Distress Residency in het King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.
Karhof is een multimediale kunstenaar die gebruik maakt van fotografie, film, performance en installaties. Haar films zijn observaties over de manier waarop we de werkelijkheid interpreteren, en over de manier waarop onze verbeelding altijd aan dit proces deelneemt en er in bemiddelt.
Yasmijn Karhof blijft tot begin 2017 in Kings County Hospital en zal verslag doen van haar ervaringen op www.beautifuldistress.org

All I can see in this moment are my hands/fingers typing this and the tip of my nose if I cross my eyes. My so-called “legs” have disappeared under a desk. Do I even have feet? I don’t believe that they exist, but I would notice if they were cut off. If I look beyond my screen, out of the window and into the next building, one of those shadows is Nadja, standing in the institution where she is being cared for. Nadja, she embodies freedom, but only inside of her own mind; the rest of her is constricted to four pastel-colored walls. When she screams, nobody can understand her. To Nadja, we don’t even exist.

In August we were visited by Tom Finkelpearl, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner and members of his staff to call attention to Kings County’s relationship with the Beautiful Distress foundation, and our sponsorship of the Artist in Residence program. The Foundation uses art in an attempt to open up the world of psychiatry and battle the stigma attached to it. Coco Young is the current Beautiful Distress Artist in Residence in Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn. She is, after Annaleen Louwes, Aldo van den Broek and Christiaan Bastiaans, the fourth artist taking up a residency in the hospital and the first American.
Here she shares a few of her impressions and thoughts with the Beautiful Distress audience. A short Q & A.
Coco, why did you agree to take up this residency?
‘I decided to take up the challenge of this residency because my work is very much affected by the environments and situations that I find myself in. In order to talk about something with my work, I need to fully integrate myself in it, I need to live it. When I was younger I wanted to be a detective. My practice has an investigative side, I usually do a lot of research and immerse myself in a subject, almost like method acting. I’m sure you can imagine that being at Kings County has affected me heavily, and my experience of it is coming out through my work.'

Samenwerking tussen Beautiful Distress en Leger des Heils
Met een schenking van een geldbedrag aan Beautiful Distress laat het Leger des Heils weten helemaal achter de doelstellingen van BD te staan.
Volgens Harry Doef, directeur Zorg van het Leger des Heils in Amsterdam, heeft zijn organisatie veel raakvlakken met Beautiful Distress. Daarom heeft zijn organisatie ook besloten Beautiful Distress financieel te steunen. Bij raakvlakken denkt hij in de eerste plaats aan de rol van kunst. Daarvan zegt Doef : ‘Kunst helpt bij het herstel van het gewone leven. Daarom stimuleren wij onze programma-deelnemers en bewoners ook om zich in kunstvormen te uiten. Meestal is dat theater, dans of zang, maar ook beeldende kunst. Jaarlijks laten we dat zien tijdens een grote manifestatie in de Heineken Music Hall. Kunst speelt in onze optiek een belangrijke rol bij de zingeving. Onze hulpverlening is ingesteld op alle facetten van een mensenleven. Wij leveren psycho-sociale, medische en financiële hulp, maar daarmee ben je er niet, juist kunst helpt bij herstel en zingeving. Onze doelgroep zit vol creatief talent, de stap tussen begaafd en kwetsbaar is namelijk maar heel klein.’

‘Ik heb een jaar nodig gehad om tot de kern te komen van mijn verblijf in Kings County. Het voelde als een zware verantwoordelijkheid om de juiste selectie te maken van mijn werk. Psychiatrie is één groot cliché. Het wordt al gauw een melodrama. Door de armoede leek het One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest in het kwadraat. En zoals altijd met heftige ervaringen, ben ik er sterker uit gekomen,’ dat vertelt kunstenaar Aldo van den Broek op een warme zomerdag 2016 op een terras in de Amsterdamse binnenstad.

Galerie Ron Mandos proudly presents FERNWEH, a solo-exhibition with the latest works by Dutch artist Aldo van den Broek (NL, 1985).
In 2015 Aldo got invited to the artist in residence ‘Beautiful Distress’ to stay four months at the psychiatric department of ‘Kings Count Hospital’, the only mental institution in New York with a government-sponsored health insurance. By living so intensively in between mostly poor and mentally ill people he got confronted with his own way of thinking, living, working and surviving. FERNWEH is Aldo’s longing for a confusing and non-existent place.
